The quaint cobbled streets of the many Tuscan hill top villages often reward the wanderer with tantalizing glimpses out across the walls to magnificent countryside lying beyond. Deeper into the myriad of passages and alleyways, other secrets lie in store - ancient buildings, tiny churches in tranquil squares, cats lazing on sun-drenched steps. My overwhelming visual memory, however, is of colours - the blues of the sky, the evening sunsets, the vivacity of the flowers and the brightly painted buildings. In this picture of Pienza, I loved the way the shaded confines of the alleyway were dramatically countered by the splashes of yellow, red and green in the building beyond, and the way that the building's shape was dictated visually by the final archway which framed it so captivatingly.
